Description

From the end of the 8th century, the Vikings, who came from Scandinavia, regularly appeared in Great Britain and on the European mainland with their longships for raids. These ocean-going battleships, about 20 meters long, had a bow at the front and aft so that they could enter or leave in both directions. Thanks to a shallow draught of just under 1.50 meters, the Vikings were also able to sail or row on rivers and thus raid areas deep inland. With the combat ships, also known as dragons, which had a speed of about 20 knots and were maneuverable, the Vikings advanced as far as Iceland, Greenland and even North America, as settlement finds prove.
